The lever type matters too. Close-coupled cisterns almost always use a side lever or a push button through the lid, while older low-level suites more often run a side lever connected by an external link arm. Ordering a replacement lever without checking which type is fitted is a common cause of parts being sent back.
Plumb2U stocks side levers, lid-mounted levers and the link arms and clips that connect them to flush valves and siphons, priced for trade buyers ordering more than one at a time. For a plumber working through several lever jobs a week, having a trade supplies merchant that lists the fitting details clearly rather than a single generic photo makes the difference between one van visit and two. Plumb2U Trade Counter, trading from Epsom but supplying trade accounts UK-wide, carries a lever range that covers most of what turns up on a round.
Fixing centres, meaning the distance between the two mounting holes in the pan, is the measurement that actually determines whether a seat will fit at all, and it varies enough between manufacturers that assuming a standard spacing is a common source of returned parts. The two most frequently seen spacings in the UK are around 140mm to 145mm and 160mm to 165mm centre to centre, and a seat bought for the wrong spacing simply will not sit over both holes.

Top-fix hinges solve exactly that access problem by using a bolt and a quick-release or turn-to-tighten fixing that can be adjusted entirely from above the pan, with no need to get underneath at all. This has made top-fix the standard choice on most new soft-close seats sold in the last several years, and it is usually the easier option to specify when the underside of the pan is difficult to reach or when the original fixing has seized.
